Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Harrison-Long Point and/or Harrison-Burr open to the public?

No, we are not open daily to the public. The James B Harrison Foundation does not cater to individual users but serves Youth Groups (Boy Scouts, 4-H, FFA), School Programs, Non-profits, and Volunteer and Conservation Organizations like Texas Master Naturalist Chapters, and Texas Parks and Wildlife to name a few, by providing the land as a primitive venue to fulfill their needs. Opportunities for individuals to visit are available seasonally and can be found on our calendar.

Q: Why must I sign-up/register to attend an activity/event?

Registration is required for two reasons. The first is to ensure an enjoyable experience for all of our visitors and our wildlife. Participation for different activities does vary. Second, as we are a primitive venue sometimes nature does not cooperate. By registering, we can notify participants of any changes or cancellations to scheduled activities.

Q: What is the different between a “bird count” vs “nature walk”?

Our bird counts are ideal for bird enthusiasts often called “birders” who do not mind covering various difficulties of terrain seeking and counting birds for wildlife documentation purposes. Nature walks are of a more casual pace and are ideal for birders, wildlife photographers, and the general nature enthusiasts.

Q: My organization is interested in hosting an activity, how can I schedule a date?

First, you can reach out via the “Contact Us” button at the top of our website and complete an inquiry. Our Charitable Activities Director will then reach out to you directly requesting more information. All activity requests are subject to approval and are not guaranteed.

Q: Do you have physical trails?

No. Our trails are mowed grass paths that wind between various wildlife habitats. During the early mornings the grass can be dewy and during wet weather it can be muddy.

Q: Are restrooms on-site?

We are a primitive venue and do not have permanent restrooms. A request can be made in advance for our 5-station (sink/toilet) trailer. If your event is required to have additional accommodations, it will be the responsibility of your organization to procure them.

Q: What chaperone/teacher to student ratio is required for field trips?

We recommend a 1:10-12 chaperone/teacher to student ratio.
