Harrison-Burr Property
Located in Wharton County near the community of Burr, between Wharton and Boling, Harrison–Burr encompasses approximately 1,500 acres dedicated to conservation, outdoor education, research, and charitable activities. Managed with a focus on supporting waterfowl, songbirds, and other wildlife, the property serves as a valuable resource for conservation, citizen science, wildlife research, and outdoor learning opportunities.
The property features a diverse mix of wetlands, lakes, wooded timber, grasslands, open pasture, and agricultural habitats. Three lakes, ranging from 27 to 50 acres in size, are lined with Bald Cypress and Oak trees and provide important habitat for resident and migratory wildlife. One of these lakes supports an active rookery that serves as a nesting site for a variety of colonial waterbirds.
A three-mile birding trail allows visitors to experience the property's diverse habitats and abundant wildlife. Since the first organized bird survey in 2020, Harrison–Burr has become a popular destination in Wharton County for bird watching and nature observation, particularly during the winter months when large numbers of waterfowl utilize the property's wetlands and lakes.
Seasonal bird surveys are conducted throughout the year, including a New Year Bird Count, Spring Bird Count, and Winter Waterfowl Surveys. Observations collected through eBird contribute valuable data that help monitor species diversity, track wildlife populations, and support the Foundation's habitat management efforts.
To date, nearly 200 bird species have been documented at Harrison–Burr, making the property an important destination for birders, naturalists, educators, and conservation enthusiasts.
